The Santiago Bernabeu Is A 'Football Cathedral'

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has compared the Santiago Bernabeu stadium to a cathedral and says that the club's fans appreciate good football.

The Spain international joined the Spanish giants from Liverpool in 2009 and has established himself as one of the best and most important players in the Blancos unit.

Alonso started his footballing career with Basque giants Real Sociedad but is happy playing for Madrid despite the rivalry between the two clubs and the regions they belong to.

"The Bernabeu is one of the most impressive football scenarios in the world," said the 29-year-old, according to Madrid's official website. "You know you are in a football cathedral when you’re there.

"The atmosphere is great whenever you play well because fans appreciate good football. That’s what they like. They are very passionate whenever we play."

Alonso hails from a family of footballers as his father Periko Alonso featured for la Real and won the Spanish Primera Divison title twice in a row with them.

The Tolosa-born player's brother, Mikel, features for Tenerife but Alonso claims that they were never pressured to play football for a living.

"It’s important because I’ve always been related to football," said the World Cup winner. "My dad was a football player and he later became a manager. Our connection with the sport has been really strong.

"I’ve been playing football since I was a kid, when I played with my brothers and friends. I’ve always watched football.

"We’ve never really been pushed to become football players, but we’ve always been influenced by the sport."
